Lately I've been concentrating mostly on somewhat hipster-approved music genres such as post-metal. Not that there's anything wrong in it, but since I also enjoy MOSHWORTHY METALLIC HARDCORE type of music, I've decided to write an entry about this little french band of called Kickback, and their latest album, No Surrender.
Since 90's, Kickback have been (in)famous for being a violent band. I haven't had a chance of seeing them live, but from what I've heard, during Kickback concerts it's not uncommon to be assaulted by not only other members of the audience, but also by the band itself.
The music is, of course, metallic hardcore in vein of American bands such as Integrity, Gehenna and Merauder. But Kickback does have sort of its own darker, european heavy metal edge on their music, and one can definitely hear influences of black metal on their latter releases. Apparently, Dwid Hellion of Integrity described Kickback as "The only band that can fuse the Cromags with Peter Sotos", which is pretty spot-on. The sense of nihilism and decadence in their music can also be found in their lyrics, which are heavily influenced by the likes of Marquise De Sade and Gaspar Noé.
Speaking of Gaspar Noé, here's a bit of trivia for the ones like me who love both hardcore and quality films: Apparently, Gaspar Noé and Kickback were supposed to work together for a music video, but it never materialized. Which is a shame, because if there's a band that perfectly translates Noés vision into metal music, it has to be Kickback. The band has since paid their respect for the said director as soundbites within their songs and in merch designs, etc.
I'd recommend No Surrender to anyone with decent taste of hardcore music. It can be found in spotify along other releases, but for some reason some of the songs on No Surrender are botched there, so you should just probably download it somewhere or just buy a copy (sadly, it appears to be avaible only on cd and not vinyl). Kickback are apparently working on a new record, and I'm pretty stoked for that. Also I hope they will be touring in northern europe this time around.

I love "hipster black metal".
Sorry about the awful post title, actually, fuck any stubborn elitist who uses the term "hipster black metal" on bands like Wolves In The Throne Room, Altar Of Plagues and Alcest. The so-called "atmospheric/depressive" black metal is currently one of my favorite types of music. Some such bands I've been stoked about recently:
Lantlôs - Neon
This album has Neige on vocals, so I guess you could rightfully compare it to Alcest. I wasn't too stroked on the previous album, but this one hits the jackpot. Awesome, highly melodic and melancholic stuff with lyrics on france, german and english. Loving this very much.

Deafheaven - Demo
Don't let the somewhat "nu metal-ish" name distract you. This is a recent signing of Deathwish Inc and apparently one of Jacob Bannon's favorites of 2010. They claim to be influenced by post rock and screamo alongside black metal, and you can hear that on their demo, as there are some moments very reminiscent of Envy and Funeral Diner. This is probably the third time I mention Alcest in this post, but again, yeah, I'd recommend Deafheaven to fans of said band.

Season's greetings from Envy
So I was kinda late to listen to the new Envy album. I used to be a huge Envy fan in 2004 and 2005 or so, and their albums All The Footprints...etc and A Dead Sinking Story caused me massive amounts of instant orgasms back then. They still do; Envy records from that era were pretty much the perfect mixture of emotional hardcore/screamo sound and the so-called post rock genre, and this was because the post rock part wasn't too domineering in those songs. Perfect fucking EPIC hardcore songs from some weird Japanese guys who weren't afraid to try something new, without being "complex for the sake of being complex".
Then came Insomniac Doze and I pretty much lost most of my interest in this band.
I know a lot of you consider Insomniac Doze to be a good record. Maybe even a near-perfect record. Maybe some sorry people even think it's the best album ever done by Envy. Now don't get me wrong; I don't consider Insomnia Doze to be a bad record, not at all. It's just that... I find it boring. They scrapped the hardcore and screamo part almost entirely and became just another post rock band with occasional screamed vocals. There's just something in Isomniac Doze that turns me off, and I quickly got bored of trying to "get into it". I gave a few listens to Abyssal ep, but I felt the same way about it; Not really my piece of cake.
After that came the Envy/Jesu split and Envy/Thursday split which were a lot better in my book. Still a far cry from the awesomeness All The Footprints and A Dead Sinking Story, and in some parts, the songs on those said splits were even overshadowed by the songs on Jesu and Thursday sides respectively.
So naturally, I didn't have too high hopes for Envy's new long play, Recitation. A few days ago, I finally decided to give it a listen. It didn't start very well; I kinda felt like the record only begun at about five minutes of the second track, with the first track consisting mostly of ambient sounds and spoken word vocals which is something I used to love but have become a bit of a cliche for me, nowadays.
But... I was wrong. To my surprise, after listening to the whole record, I was actually thrilled to find out I liked it. A much. Recitation sounds like the Envy I used to love; This is some fucking epic real emotional hardcore instead of just feedback guitars and other post rock cliches. Of course, there's that side still present; However, it's in balance with faster, more rock oriented songs like "Dreams Coming To An End".
Recitation is my favorite album of the moment and has restored my love in Envy; Baby, I forgive you for the mistakes you made. We all make mistakes sometimes. Maybe I'll even give Insomniac Doze and Abyssal another chance. P.S. Please play in Finland some day.

I was listening to the song "Rain Clouds Running in a Holy Night", the third track of Recitation. It sounded oddly familiar. There was some sort of... Christmas-y feel on it. Then it struck me; Part of it is directly lifted from a christmas carol called "Silent Night, Holy Night". I know this shit, I used to have to sing this stuff in school and even at home when I was a kid. I sang like a goddamn angel back then, motherfuckers.
Holy shit, Envy made a fucking christmas song?!
It's pretty cool actually. And other songs have somewhat christmas/winter like feeling on them too. I wouldn't be surprised if there were other parts lifted straight from old christmas carols as well. I guess western christmas traditions are somewhat exotic to Japanese people.
Anyway, I can imagine myself visiting my parents during the holidays and listening to this song in a candle light, drinking glögi (a.k.a. "mulled wine") while cold northern wind blows over the snow fields outside the window. Or some shit like that.

Basically one could describe them as "post rock"/"post metal" (I still think the term "post metal" sounds dumb as fuck but everybody's using it so what can I do) band and they're fucking good. They're kind of like a finnish post-rock version of Toto or something because as you can see from the video, for them playing instruments is fucking serious business, and they don't make mistakes in their music and sure as hell they don't do mistakes in life.

Back in businezzz, motherfuckers.
Hello again sweethearts,
I know I haven't updated this shit that much. Well, it's been like 5 months since my first posts and since then there's been none. I'm not very good at getting things done, as some of you might know.
But anyways, I created a blog page for my band, Polemarch (right here) and that kinda reminded of the fun (hah) of writing a blog. And since I nowadays live quite literary in the middle of fucking nowhere, in a small city of Virrat located about 100 km from my old home town where pretty much everything in my life except my school (which is why I had to move here on the first place) still is, I pretty much have over 9000 hours of boredom every week. So maybe I'll eventually update this blog more often than before. Or maybe not.
And as you might have noticed, I've decided to write in english for now-on. I'm planning on posting some download links, reviews etc. to this blog, so I think it would be nice if people from outside of Finland understood what the fuck I'm writing about and possibly even read about some interesting new stuff from around here. Because, you know, most people don't speak this brand of moonspeak known as "finnish" as the population of Finland is around 148 people. Ok, maybe a little more, but not much.

Ilosaaren mega-fun keskitysleiri 2010
Jälleen kerran Joensuun tunnetuimmilta vuosittaisilta sikailujuhlilta kesäfestivaaleilta selviytyneenä, voi tuijottaa peilistä omiin krapulaisiin silmiinsä ja kysyä, alkaisiko ehkä ensi vuonna olemaan liian vanha tämänkaltaisille koetuksille; Niin keho ja mieli kun ovat koetuksella tämän vähintään kolme vuorokautta kestävän henkisen ja psyykkisen rappiotilan armoilla. Voisi myös kysyä itseltään, onko todella tervehenkistä maksaa 75 euroa festarilipusta, puhumattakaan leirintäalue ym. -maksuista, kun bändejä ehti näkemään kokonaisuudessaan vain neljä kappaletta ja epäterveellisiä harrastuksia voisi suorittaa halvemmalla myös oman kodin suojissa.
...Mutta mitä vittua, aivan helvetin hauskaahan siellä oli tänäkin vuonna, ja epäilemättä samat "virheet" tulee toistettua ensi vuonnakin.
Katatonia synkisteli Ylex-teltassa perusmukavaan malliin. En ole hirveästi jaksanut uusinta levyä kuunnella (varmaan "ihan jees", mutta muutaman kuuntelukerran perusteella vähän liikaa nyky-ruotsiheviä omaan makuuni) mutta kai tämä on vähän sellainen allekirjoittaneen ikioma Eppu Normaalit jota tulee keikalle mentyä katsomaan ihan vanhasta tottumuksesta, ja siitä mielenkiinnosta, onko Jonas vieläkään keksinyt saksien funktiota. Ei ole, Jonas näyttää vieläkin Cousin It:iltä.
Sellaista tarjosi Joensuu tänävuonna, siis lähinnä musiikin osalta. Mistään mielipuolisista leirintäaluesekoiluista en nyt jaksa sen kummemmin kirjoitellakaan. Ensi vuonna sit uudestaan, jos mitään yhtäkkistä henkistä edistystä ei allekirjoittaneelle ole tapahtunut.

Lauantain toinen kokonaisuudessaan tsekkailtu ulkolainen bändi oli Bad Religion. Tämä olikin ensimmäinen kerta, kuin todistin tätä 30-vuotista taivaltaan juhlistavaa jenkkipunkin pioneeria elävänä. Ja oikein mainioltahan se kuulostikin. Hittejä kuultiin koko miehen iän kattavalta elinkaarelta, ja vaikka setti tuntui tietenkin vähän turhan pitkältä tämänkaltaisen musiikin kohdalla, niin annetaan nyt kuitenkin anteeksi, mitäs turhaan tiivistämään ja jättämään tärkeitä kappaleita setistä pois. Mutta hei Greg, missä Into The Unknow:n aikoinaan hurjan suosion saavuttaneet klassikkobiisit..?
Omalla kohdallani helvetillisellä krapulalla ja yllättävällä Rax-reissulla sekä Joensuun keskustorilla koetulla yhteentörmäyksellä minulle hailaavan spurgun kanssa käynnistynyt sunnuntai toi Telttalavalle (oliko siellä edes tuon nimistä lavaa?) Belgian ehkä tunnetuimman lahjan synkälle hardcorelle. Kyseessä oli siis Rise And Fall, joka nähtiin suomen kamaralla edellisen kerran muutama vuosi sitten klubikiertueella. Tämänkaltainen festariympäristö ei kyllä oikeen soveltunut bändille, soundit puuroutuivat välillä niin pahasti että oli vaikea ottaa selkoa siitä mikä biisi oli menossa ja yleisökin tuntui olevan vähän liian krapulainen lähteäkseen täysillä mukaan menoon ja meininkiin. Ja olisihan sitä biisivalinnoissakin ollut hieman parantamisen varaa, itse olisin toivonut vähemmän sitä hidastelua ja enemmän nopeita biisejä. Mutta olenkin viiden sekunnin keskittymiskyvyn omaava urpo, eli eiköhän tuosta keikasta varsinkin uudet R&F-fanit saaneet enemmänkin irti. Kuultiinpa keikalla muuten ihan uusikin biisi, jonka bändi ilmeisesti soitti ihan ensimmäistä kertaa livenä. Jee! Mutta toivottavasti Rise And Fall nähdään (lähi)tulevaisuudessa uudelleenkin Suomessa, ja mieluiten ihan klubikeikalla (kiertueella).
Faith No More aiheutti itsessäni etukäteen ristiriitaisia tunteita. Varmasti 16-vuotiaana erikoisnuorena olisin virtsannut timanteilla koristettua hunajaista spermaa ympäri pitäjien, jos olisin kuullut uutiset Faith No Moresta esiintymässä Ilosaarirockissa. Mutta nyt olen 25-vuotias, lyhythiuksinen "mies", ja aika on ajanut k. bändin suurimman fanituksen ohi. Onhan se edelleenkin "ihan hyvä bändi", mutta esimerkiksi edelliskesäiset comeback-keikat Helsingissä ja Ruisrockissa skippasin ilman sen kummempaa hampaidenkiristelyä, lähinnä karseiden lipunhintojen vuoksi. Mutta kyllähän FNM:ää oli nyt pakko raahautua katsomaan itse festivaalialueelta pois lämpimän valmissangrian nauitskelun ääreltä, kun kerran vielä inhimillisissä mittapuissa liikkuvan Ilosaarilipun hinnalla niin pääsi tekemään.
Noh, totta kai heti ensimmäiset sekunnit herättivät sen finninaamaisen pitkätukan sisälläni (myös päihteillä voi olla osuutta asiaan), ja täytyi myöntää itselleni että nautin keikasta. Hittiä hitin perään ja Mike Patton oli trademark-kreisi. Sain myös sellaisen käsityksen, että tuskin Faith No Moren comeback-keikoista enää vähään aikaan päästään nauttimaan. Ja ihan hyvä kai niin.

Kvelertak
Viimeaikojen kovin yllättäjä iski jostain norjan synkistä, savuavien kirkonraunioiden täyttämistä vuonoista. Onhan se pitkään jo tiedetty että Norjasta tulee ajoittain muutakin hyvää musiikkia kuin black metallia, ja tästä bändistä löytyy myös elementtejä siitä vaikka tyylipuhtaasta mustasta metallista ollaan kaukana. Kvelertakia voisi kuvailla hardcoren, (punk)rockin ja metallin välimuodoksi, ja ensimmäisenä itselleni tuli mieleen länsinaapurimme Ninen vanhempi materiaali. Ninen viimeisin kokopitkä oli jotain todella kuuntelukelvotonta paskaa, joten ehkä tässä voisi olla seuraava skandinavian hevipunk-kuningas?
Ninen lisäksi mieleen tulee paikoitellen niinikään skandinaaviset Entombed (tottakai) ja Breach, kuin myös uudet rokkaavammat hardcorebändit kuten Doomriders ja Gallows. Ja kuten jo alussa tuli mainittua, on mukana elementtejä myös norjan tärkeimmästä vientituotteestakin, vieraileepa ekalla raidalla Taake-yhtyeen iloinen nokkamies Høst. Kuitenkaan mistään ärsyttävän itsetietoisesta eri genrejen sekametelisopasta ei ole kyse, vaan Kvelertak kuulostaa juuri siltä miltä sen pitääkin kuulostaa.
Tässä on ainakin allekirjoittaneelle ehdoton hellepäivien soundtrack. Ai niin, ja Kvelertak tarkoittaa "kuristusotetta", kuinka vitun siistiä? Eikä tässä vielä kaikki, levyn on tuottanut Convergesta tuttu Kurt Ballou ja kansitaiteesta vastaa Baronessin John Baizley.
